::John Updike::
John Updike passed away yesterday, at the age of 76. Never been a huge reader of his work, but for America there are probably very few writers that so fiercely capture the malaise of the suburban, white, middle class. (think ‘American Beauty’ or the new ‘Revolutionary Road’)
Updike at 26 (!), writing for The New Yorker.
I just liked this picture. Updike at his home in...
::the Big Picture::
One of the small details that I enjoy about working at Starbucks is that we sell The New York Times each day. It’s an amazing paper, and even if I don’t get around to reading it that day, I can marvel at their front page photographs.
Recently, however, I’ve been amazed at The Boston Globe’s online feature called The Big Picture. They always have incredible photos to browse...
::daily routines::
This is how C.S. Lewis described his perfect routine in “Surprised By Joy.” I’ve been wasting time reading about people’s routines and rituals on the website Daily Routines. It’s fascinating to me.
Also… each day I consider myself overwhelmingly blessed to have found someone to share Life and the World with so perfectly. Lewis’s description of walking...
::Neko Case::
Got the new Paste magazine in the mail today. Always a treat. Lo and behold, Neko Case on the cover! Here’s a neat article about her.
::sighting - Bill Murray::
Last week Beth’s friend Mary Louise visited. We had a grand time. While I was at work though, they ran into Bill Murray at Urban Outfitters. I was so supremely jealous, since I’ve lately gotten back on a Wes Anderson kick (thanks Matt Lambert).
According to the two of them, he was with his kids and looked like an old grumpy homeless man. But were convinced it was him upon hearing...
This song is awesome. This video is awesome.
It’s a fact that most music videos these days just plain suck. This one is hypnotizing and inventive. They did this with double-sided sticky tape, fans, and the little balls ripped out of bean bags. Awesome.
::movie - Doubt::
Beth and I finally saw ‘Doubt.’ We’d been pretty excited about it because of the cast and the religious subject matter. I can say that we weren’t disappointed. It was worth watching just to see Philip Seymour Hoffman and Meryl Streep go head to head.
Amy Adams was perfect as well. It was a play originally, so primarily about the dialogue and ideas, so we just watched...
::Slumdog Millionaire::
If you haven’t seen this film yet - and you can do so - then I suggest you go do so as quickly as possible.
It deserves the hype it’s gotten. Possibly my favorite movie of the year.
Exellent director. Perfectly scored. Great acting. Incredible setting. Makes you want to travel to India SO badly.
And for such a “feel-good movie of the year” type movie, has...
::Letters to Obama::
Head over to this page for more student letters to Obama.
Head here to buy a book.
::half-priced burgers::
Rue de Jean after church for half-price (delicious) burgers and some of the best fries on the peninsula.
See you there?
::We Feel Fine::
Beth shared with me this really amazing website that has taken up a bit of my time this morning and now I feel like sharing with the rest of you. (It’s what I do.) To me, it’s something like PostSecret or Found - part social experiment, part entertainment, part convincing-proof-that-humanity-isn’t-all-lost-and-we-still-can-FEEL, part whatever-it-is-i-can’t-stop-looking.

::Under the Overpass::
I finished this book last night. Just in time too, since I already have a lot of reading to get started on for class.
Several of my friends had read it, and I’m constantly battling (inwardly and outwardly) about issues involving homeless and poverty-stricken people. I’m not going to get into a long discussion of my views on how we should respond to poor people in our communities or...
::photos from camping::
These are from the fall. I just haven’t shared yet.
This is my favorite time of day.
Recognize this place?
Kindly stranger: Would you like for us to take you guys’ picture?!?
Beth: (to Kindly Stranger) No thanks. We have lots of pictures from here.
(to me) ::wink, wink::
::rushmore::
I take great delight in the films of Wes Anderson. I wish that all of life looked like his movies - it would make even the most mundane aspects appear either hilarious or profound. If I die an unexpected, young, tragic death, then I hope that Wes Anderson gets the rights to make the film version of my life.
Some friends came over the other night and we watched ‘Rushmore,’ which I...

…because nothing is more awesome than a good ‘stache.
my wife linked to this amazing article, and since we’re on the subject of facial hair, i thought you might should read it.
::beardos::
Oh, hai. I was just admiring Ray’s beard in the previous video. Lately, I’ve been keeping my beard pretty tame. I think Beth likes it better that way. Last year this time it was pretty unruly.
Exhibit A:
Anyways, it made me want to share this new story I saw recently about beard culture in Portland. Of course. Sometimes I think Beth and I would be better suited living there....
::come.alive::
The name of this blog came about from a quote I heard years ago in college.
“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”
When I read it, it was attributed to “a missionary in Asia.” Despite the fact that it wasn’t coined by someone famous, it stuck in my head and I still need it...
::One Week::
Looks like Pacey has a great movie coming out soon. This looks refreshingly indie, with hints of ‘Into the Wild.’ Check out this trailer for “One Week.”
Also, I’ve been to that waterfall at the 1:40 mark.
And is that the awkward ‘Elizabethtown’ dance at the 1:52 mark?
::what's your favorite position?::
I’m surprisingly different than the average sleeper. I generally begin as a Starfish, sometime as I sleep I shift into a Soldier, and then if I wake up in the middle of the night I go back to sleep by Freefalling.
I only do the Foetus or Log if I’m sleeping on the hard ground, but that’s how the majority of people sleep (?!?!).
I’m seriously interested. Please comment...
::Dylan::
Selections from an article by Bono on Bob Dylan, in Rollingstone’s recent ‘100 Greatest Singers’ issue.
“Bob Dylan did what very, very few singers ever do. He changed popular singig. And we have been living in a world shaped by Dylan’s singing ever since. Almost no one sings like Elvis Presley anymore. Hundreds try to sing like Dylan. When Sam Cooke played Dylan...
::ryan adams::
In two months time Beth, Costa, Rita, Allysanne, and I (possibly along with Beth’s brother Brandon) will be rocking out to the groovy tunes of the legendary Ryan Adams and his band The Cardinals.
I can’t wait. I’ve already gone through all of the past set-lists on their band blog - The Cardinal Cave - and am working on a mix cd of the songs they are most likely to play. We had...

Dorks go out for New Year’s Eve. Cool people stay in and take pictures! I hope everyone had a fun and safe night. I have many resolutions for 2009. A few are to sell more things this year and to continue to try my best to hone certain skills. Also, read more and eat lots of vegetables.
